Does touring feel hard or stressful?
You are not alone. A Family Navigator can help you make calls, set up tours, and create a plan for free. We can also help you decide what to ask.
This guide helps you compare options, ask the right questions, and pick a place where your child can feel safe, supported, and ready to learn.
The goal is to find a place you trust, with caring adults, clear routines, and a learning environment that helps your child grow. Use the steps below to narrow choices, tour with confidence, and make a decision you can feel good about. And if you want help at any point, our Family Navigators are here.
Write down what has to work for your family: hours, location, cost, and the age of your child. If a program cannot meet these basics, it is okay to move on quickly.
Pick 3–5 programs to contact first. Use your “must-haves” to narrow the list.
Save time and narrow your list by calling.
Ask: Do you have openings for my child’s age? What are your hours? What is the weekly cost? When can I schedule a tour? If you work nights or weekends, ask about hours and late fees. If you qualify, ask if they accept CCAP.
Try to tour when children are active and avoid nap times. Ask how long the tour will be and who you will meet with. If you need an interpreter or a specific time, say so when you schedule.
Before you go, write down your top questions and your must-haves. Bring paper or use your phone to take notes. You can also bring Thrive’s Family Quality Standards to know what to look for and what to ask.
Ask if photos are allowed. If yes, take pictures of things you may forget, like the daily schedule, tuition information, and the pickup and drop-off area. Photos can help you compare programs later.
Before the tour ends, ask: What paperwork do you need? Is there an application fee? How long does enrollment take? What is the waitlist process, if there is one? Who should I contact if I have questions?
Right after you leave, take two minutes to write notes: What did you like? What worried you? What questions are still unanswered? Do this every time, so it is easy to compare.
